Description:
Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is a new type of environmental protection waterproofing and anti-seepage material, composed of high-swelling sodium bentonite
sandwiched between woven and nonwoven geotextiles or geomembranes. The bentonite is encapsulated and fixed by needle-punching or adhesive bonding,
forming a strong composite structure with excellent hydraulic performance.
When hydrated, the bentonite expands to form a dense, low-permeability gel layer that effectively blocks water and other liquids.
GCL provides reliable, long-term waterproofing and is an ideal alternative to traditional compacted clay liners and geomembranes.
Key Advantages
Excellent Impermeability:
Permeability coefficient ≤ 1×10⁻¹¹ cm/s; comparable to 1.5–2.0 mm HDPE geomembrane.
Self-Sealing Capability:
Bentonite swells upon contact with water to fill voids and repair minor damages automatically.
Easy and Fast Installation:
Simple overlapping installation, no need for specialized equipment or thick clay layers.
High Durability:
Resistant to chemical attack, UV exposure, freeze–thaw cycles, and long-term environmental stress.
Eco-Friendly and Safe:
Made from natural materials; non-toxic, recyclable, and environmentally sustainable.
Cost-Effective:
Lightweight material reduces transport and labor costs while maintaining excellent performance.
Application:
Landfill lining or capping: containment of leachate in construction of landfills (urban, industrial and special solid waste) and reclamation of exhausted landfill sites or contaminated industrial areas.
Mining: lining of tailings ponds for heap-leaching mining process.
Waterproofing: used in reservoirs, hydraulic works, decorative ponds, recreational lakes, open-cut tunnels, underpasses and secondary containment of petroleum storage tanks & building basements.
Ground water protection: water table protection in transport infrastructures (roads, railways, airports).
Soil retaining structures: protection of benches in multi – tier retaining and MSE structures.
